Упродовж морфогенезу листків вивчено дію важких металів на динаміку процесів пероксидації та вмісту компонентів поверхневого шару кутикули листків деревних рослин. Встановлено, що в умовах промислового забруднення в листках Populus italica за найвищого фітоекстракційного потенціалу незначно активувались (в 1,7 раза) вільнорадикальні процеси, а також збільшувалась сумарна кількість поверхневих ліпідів кутикули, тоді як їх гетерогенність зменшувалась, що можна розглядати як адаптивні реакції виду. Це зумовлює його високу фізіологічну стійкість в умовах надмірного промислового забруднення. В органах асиміляції Betula pendula за низької акумуляції важких металів вміст ТБК-активних продуктів зростав більш як у 2,7 раза, а кількість поверхневих ліпідів зменшувалась, що вказує на низьку здатність виду адаптуватися до змінених умов довкілля. Проте на тлі зниження кількості фосфоліпідів і дигліцеридів рівень гетерогенності ліпідних сполук у листках В. pendula підвищувався за рахунок фракцій вільних жирних кислот і стеринів, які, ймовірно, використовувалися для стабілізації кутикулярного шару в умовах забруднення.
